Book Review for the Fault in Our Stars

For this paper, I will be reviewing The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This novel is centered around a young girl, named April, who was diagnosed with cancer. One night she attended a support group and ran into a boy by the name of Augustus. Eventually the two traveled around the world, spent a lot of time together, and fell in love. In the end, Augustus learned that his body contained much cancer and he ends up passing away.

In this novel, John Green has a very unique style of writing. He spends most of this novel focusing on a couple of major characters and tells such stories from the point of view of one person (April). By having this point of view, John presents before us what April is doing, as well as what she is personally thinking (without telling the other characters about such deep thoughts). By having this point of view, the reader can feel as if they are truly in the story and part of the novel. The author also includes many personal and in-depth “scenes” to clarify the storyline and keep the reader engaged. By using such personal and heart-touching stories, the reader is not only engaged in the novel, but the reader also experiences some very emotional responses. The reader feels sorrow towards the idea that many teenagers are suffering and dying from cancer, but the reader also experiences some joy in the fact that a great relationship was made. Thirdly, the author presents his ideas in a way that makes the reader question, “what is going to happen next?” The reader is left questioning, what will happen to Augustus? Will the two successfully make it to their destination? These are just a couple of questions, but there are MANY more. All of these questions makes the reader want to read just one more page! In the end, I would definitely recommend this novel. This novel has such a great overall point of view and plot that leaves the reader with the idea that life is short and you should live it out (just as how the characters in this novel did). Not only does this novel hold greater meaning that you can apply to your life, it is also a good read. I would recommend this to anyone who is into heart-touching novels (sorrowful AND joyful times). I would recommend this book to someone who can relate to any of the stories or themes found in this novel (such as love, friendship, hard times, etc.). Also, although many males may find this book interesting, I feel that this story can definitely be a good read for females (as it creates many different emotional responses). In the end, the plot, storyline, point of view, overall engagement, and the author’s style makes this book a “must read”.

Theme Statement:

This novel centers around the idea that life is short, and that we should make the most of it, express joy, and not let the negative actions of others bring us down.
